Our musical director Justin Butcher has many talents – musician, playwright, actor, director – and this week, we have the opportunity to enjoy another of his intriguing plays.
Written and directed by Justin, and starring acclaimed actor Rupert Mason, Mr Owen’s Pocket Book is a new play exploring the First World War and its poetry. It follows a British officer travelling from Allied HQ to the Western Front, one week before the Armistice. He discovers the pocket book of a young lieutenant, Mr Owen, killed that day – and we discover Wilfred Owen’s experiences of the war through his poetry, and the poetry of his contemporaries.
Mr Owen’s Pocket Book is part of an evening of remembrance commemorating the outbreak of the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago. The evening will also include the premiere of To Stretcher Bearers, a new choral piece by Maddy Paxman, performed by singers from St Luke’s community choir, Vox Holloway.
